The main lines of his activities are: prediction of environmental conditions for coal and other minerals extraction; research in the sphere of developing modern geological and geophysical methods and technologies; optimal solutions on the issues of technological safety in extractive industries, in construction at the undermined territories and under other challenging mining and geological sphere of predicting mining and geological conditions for mining coal seams from the surface and under the mine conditions;<\/li>\n<li>Reservoir quality studies and assessment of a coal deposit gas content by a set of geological and geophysical methods using petrophysical and formation analysis;<\/li>\n<li>Geological and geophysical research into the negative natural and technogenic processes affecting life safety during the industrial development of geological environment;<\/li>\n<li>Scientific and technical support in prospecting and exploration of mineral resources, construction and reconstruction of a mining industry infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li>Development of specialized in-mine geophysical equipment in intrinsically- and explosion-proof embodiment admitted for conducting ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Developments &amp; Scientific Achievements<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>In the process of carrying out fundamental scientific research, the theoretical basis for the use of in-mine geophysics and of the methods for mathematical modeling of physical fields distribution in coal-rock mass have been developed;<br \/>\ntechnical and methodological developments on the in-mine geophysical equipment enhancement and further development of the in-mine geophysics methodology have been accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>In a scientific first a methodology for geological and geophysical prediction of methane reservoirs based on the coal petrophysics principles and patterns of lithological variability of the subject of research has been elaborated for coal deposits.<br \/>\nThe methodology developed allows identifying the areas of local improvement of reservoir units quality by physical properties of the rock mass estimated using the exploration geophysics methods, and on this basis to design the sites and path of CBM horizontal wells to provide the maximum delivery of methane.<\/p>\n<p>As well in a scientific first the <em>Guidelines for Assessing the Gas Content of Coal-Bearing Strata in Donbas Based on the Formation Analysis<\/em> have been elaborated and published for the mobile and low-cost determination of quantitative indicators of natural methane contents in coal seams and host rocks at the depths of more than 1000 m without the need for additional drilling of exploration boreholes.<\/p>\n<p>2D, 2.5 D and 3D seismic, geoelectric and geoinformation models of the geological environment for the landslide areas conditions at seismic regions of the Azov Sea and the Black Sea coasts have been developed in a scientific first within the framework of applied topics. In order to significantly improve the efficiency of 3D seismic survey in predicting the conditions of coal seams mining and industrial gas production, the software for 3D-modeling of seismic vibrations propagation in a coal mass has been elaborated. Prototype of a mine seismograph SSh12\u041a has been developed.<\/p>\n<p>Research and development operations implementation within the frameworks of the innovative projects has resulted in elaboration of a prototype of a seismic hardware and analytical system \u0410\u0410\u041a12 and a prototype of an in-mine analyzer of electromagnetic pulses ShAI-8 intended for detecting the sections of a coal-rock mass potentially prone to gas-dynamic phenomena. Both developments are admitted for operation in mines prone to coal, gas and rock outbursts. On the basis of ShAI-8 ReMi-method-based equipment has been produced under the factory conditions, the use whereof is supported by the widely-known UTAS system (computer-assisted system for safety monitoring).<\/p>\n<p>The department\u2019s comprehensive methodologies and original developments were used in research at mines and coal mining companies in Donbas, Russia and Kazakhstan, at landslide areas of Crimea, Azov and Black Sea coasts, as well as at such large engineering facilities as Ingulets Mining and Processing Plant (GOK), Solotvyno Salt Mine, railway bridge over the Amu-Darya river in Turkmenistan, Russia-Turkey gas pipeline, Eastern Siberia\u2013Pacific ocean oil pipeline, Olympic facilities in Sochi.<\/p>\n<p>The staff of the department has a portfolio of more than 700 scientific articles published, inter alia about 50 registered copyright certificates on the inventions and patents for utility models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-905-3-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"6\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Methods, Equipment and Software Used:<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<ol>\n<li>The basic method when conducting surface and underground geophysical studies is CDP seismic survey, correlation refraction shooting and seismic imaging (in-seam seismic survey). At that, 3D-technologies can be used.<\/li>\n<li>For solving the tasks of a specific range in combination with seismic survey or separately of that, it is possible to use resistivity prospecting (various resistivity prospecting devices, VES, electrical profiling (EP) etc.); near-field transient [time-domain] electromagnetic sounding while sweeping the transmitting loop at the surface for over the distance of up to 1.0 km (the transmission distance in this case is 1.0 \u2013 2.0 km); the Earth\u2019s natural pulsed electromagnetic field (ENPEMF) method for assessing the geodynamic state of a rock mass.<\/li>\n<li>The following modern geophysical equipment is used when conducting field and underground research:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>seismic acquisition system based on the Geode modules: 6 modules, 24 channels each, inter alia the ones for 3D seismic survey (Geometrics, USA);<\/li>\n<li><em>Lakkolit-24<\/em> seismic acquisition system (Russia, Zhukovsky, Moscow region);<\/li>\n<li><em>ERA-MAX<\/em> electrical exploration station for research by resistance method (Russia, St. Petersburg);<\/li>\n<li><em>Impulse-D<\/em> electrical exploration equipment for pulse induction electrical exploration by near-field transient electromagnetic sounding-transient response methods (Russia, Novosibirsk).<\/li>\n<li>Underground survey in gas- and dust-hazardous mines is performed using specialized explosion-proof equipment and instruments designed at RANIMI (mine seismic acquisition systems SSh-12\u041a and \u0410\u0410\u041a12, mine pulse analyzer ShAI-8, mine electroprospecting station ShERS-5\u041c, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Licensed software is used for data processing, inter alia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>RadExPro <\/em>for comprehensive processing of marine and land high-resolution seismic data, monitoring the quality of 2D\/3D seismic exploration data, and VSP data processing;<\/li>\n<li><em>SPW3<\/em> Engineering package for processing 3D seismic data of land and marine surveys performed using special-purpose equipment;<\/li>\n<li><em>ZondRes2d<\/em> for two-dimensional interpretation of electrical tomography data by resistance method, and of the polarization induced in land, borehole and offshore variants;<\/li>\n<li><em>Ipi2win<\/em> for one-dimensional interpretation of Vertical Electric Sounding data;<\/li>\n<li><em>Autodesk Autocad <\/em>for creating applications containing the results of geophysical survey for the department\u2019s reports; the use of topographic maps and mine maps for binding the interpretation results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-905-3-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">History<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The Institute is engaged in underground geophysical surveying since 1973, when the in-mine geophysics division was founded and thereafter became the leader in this area of works. Since 2002 the Ecological and Geophysical Research Department has been carrying out scientific-methodical and experimental research in the sphere of predicting the mining-geological conditions for coal seams mining with the use of geophysical methods. In total, more than 250 mine working areas (sections) in Donbas, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan have been surveyed, which allowed improving the efficiency and safety of mining operations. Reliability of predictions is 85 to 90%.<\/p>\n<p>Surface geophysical surveys carried out by the Institute are also of priority among the scientific and methodological activities of the OEGI, and thus they have been intensively developed since the early 1980-s of the previous century.<\/p>\n<p>The efficiency of such surveys, that are primarily aimed at the safety of mining operations, scientific and technical support of mining and ensuring technological safety of the facilities under construction and in operation, is based on their comprehensiveness (seismic, electric, magnetic, gravity, emanation survey, etc.) and as well on the use of modern 2D|3D geological and geophysical technologies. In total, more than 500 sites have been investigated at the territory of the former Soviet Union republics.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10-15 years the development of in-mine geophysical equipment is been rapidly developed based on the laboratory instruments and equipment available at the OEGI, and as well on the basis of studying the experience of modern geophysical instrumentation.
